October 1991 Kia Motors Corp. announces plans to enter U.S. marketplace. Kia announces first vehicle to be sold will be a four-door compact sedan, the Sephia, followed by a sport-utility vehicle, the Sportage.
January 1992 Kia Motors Corp. announces that Greg Warner will be executive vice president and chief operating officer of its North American operations.
October 1992 Kia Motors Corp. incorporates the U.S. subsidiary, Kia Motors America, Inc., and moves into temporary corporate offices in Irvine.

October 1998 Hyundai Business Group named winning bidder for 51 percent of Kia Motors Corp. in auction conducted by Korea Development Bank after Kia had entered receivership.

December 1998 In its first attempt, Sportage clinches Class 3000 championship of Silver State Series, beating competitors such as Nissan Pathfinder and Jeep CJ-7.
December 1998 Kia opens dealerships in Michigan in culmination of openings throughout the Midwest. This effectively makes Kia a nationally available brand with more than 500 dealerships in 49 states.
January 4, 1999 B.M. Ahn assumes the role of president and CEO of Kia Motors America.
May, 1999 Kia sells its 250,000th vehicle in the United States.
June, 1999 Kia turns in its best sales month in history with sales of 13,593 vehicles. Kia ends the first half of calendar year 1999 as the fastest-growing automotive brand in the U.S. with a period-to-period sales increase of 59 percent. Total sales for the six months are 64,558, nearly 10,000 more than total sales for all of 1997.
